Random Rainbow Blanket

2016-08-06 17.08.09-1I made this blanket with the same Stylecraft colours  as the Rainbow Blankets but random instead of the traditional rainbow order. I used a 4mm hook. I have been asked for a pattern which I don’t have because I designed it as I went along. So here is a basic outline of what I did. It’s basically a granny square blanket.

I started by making 9 small 3 round granny squares in solid colours. (I do 2 chains in the corners but none between the clusters) After the first one I attached each square on the final row using the join as you go method. Attic 24 has a good tutorial here: http://attic24.typepad.com/weblog/joining-asyougo-sqaures.html

(Tip: after each round, turn your work over and do the next round on the opposite side. This stops the square twisting).

2016-10-23-11-54-08-1Then do 6 rounds of treble clusters as in a granny square. However on the first round, in order to keep the stitch count correct so future squares are lined up, you need to do the following: Where the small squares join, you have the 2 corner holes close together. You need one cluster in these 2 holes, not one in each. To do this I did one treble in the first hole, started the 2nd treble in the same hole (yarn round hook, insert in hole, yarn round hook, pull hook through hole, yarn round hook and pull through first 2 loops on hook, leaving 2 loops on hook) Then start a 3rd treble in the 2nd hole in the same way then yarn round hook and pull through all loops on hook to finish the treble. Finally make another treble in the 2nd hole. This makes one cluster across the 2 holes which is a little bit fatter than a normal cluster. Hopefully this is clear and you can see what I mean on the photo.

finalThen you can start making and adding small 3 round granny squares all around the big square.  You should have 24.

Next I did 12 rounds of treble clusters, another round of small granny squares and finished with 18 rounds of granny clusters. You can do any combination you like as long as the rounds of treble clusters are in multiples of 6 so that your next round of small grannies fits.

Feel free to use this pattern, all I ask is that you give me credit for the design. Tag me in your instagram photos. Any questions please ask in the comments below and I will do my best to answer them. I hope it is understandable but I am not a pattern writer.

      1. hello I wrote before but I can’t find my comment now. I actually thought you meant a treble Stitch so I have done the pattern with the treble not a double do you find this would be problematic?

additionally copy, I do not know what granny clusters are. You refer to after your 12 rounds and another round of squares doing 18 granny clusters. What are those? You can email me at bad_lib@yahoo.com. ty!

        1. Hi Brandi
A UK treble is the same as a US double. If you have done a US treble I don’t know what will happen. If it is laying flat it might be ok. I have never done a granny square with US trebles.
A granny cluster is 3 trebles in one space like you do on a granny square.

          1. So then a treble cluster is the same thing as a granny cluster? You use both terms

          2. How did you figure out your multiples? I’m using larger grannies for the center. The Grannies are 7 rounds

    1. That is such a pretty blanket. I wish I had a pattern, but maybe I can follow your instruction. I am going to give it a try.

    1. That will look good. If you are on Facebook or Instagram please tag me when you post pictures so I can see how it turns out.

  1. Hi, I am making this lovely blanket and I’m on my first round of treble clusters after the 9 squares. I would like to know whether there is a chain space between each treble cluster. Many Thanks.

    1. Hi Marion. All the small grannies are joined to each other and onto the blanket by the ‘join as you go’ method. Hope this helps.

      1. Thank you, no sewing what a relief. Been crocheting for years but hate any sewing together so I will be giving this a try. Love the colours of your blanket.

  2. Thank you for taking the time to describe how you made your lovely blanket. I plan to start it tonight! x

    1. You are welcome Suzie. I hope you enjoy making it. If you are on Instagram please tag me when you post photos. I love to see what other people make. @handmadeinmarbella

  3. I DON’T THINK i HAVE EVER SEEN ANYTHING SO BEAUTIFUL. I HOPE TO TACKLE THIS. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE PATTERN. I LOVE IT.

    1. Thank you very much. I hope you enjoy making it. Please tag me in your photos if you do, I like to see what others make.

      1. Could you please get me your pattern for nice afghan that I seen in the picture.
Starts out with 9 sm squares and so many rounds of granny square stitches then more squares.
        Random Rainbow afghan

  4. Thank you so much . I just wish that I had read all that you had written before I started on mine re linking the corners. I have just had to undo mine and start again. Lesson to be learnt. Read before starting a project.
So generous of you sharing this lovely masterpiece.

  5. INSPIRING………
Your Blanket is Simply Beautiful. I also have many yarn remnants in my stash and feel this will be an ideal project to use them up. So many thanks.

    1. Hi Jennie, the blanket I made measures approximately 110cm square. I didn’t start with whole balls of yarn but the finished blanket weighs 725g which works out at less than 1 x 100g ball for each of the 9 colours. Hope this helps.

  6. I am working on this right now….your explanations are very clear and the pictures are a great help…the blanket I complete will go to The Linus Project….thanks so much for the inspiration

  7. I love this pattern!!! And I never thought to turn on a granny square, but it makes it so much easier to work! So simple and easy pattern! I will be making more of these! Thanks so much for sharing this!

  8. Wish I could crochet from a pattern but this holidays Im definitely buying a beginners book . I hope to be confident enough to crochet this blanket as soon its tooooo beautiful

  9. I just found this pattern and really want to make it however, I’ve looked several time and cannot find the size hook or type of yarn needed. Can anyone help????

  10. I’ve been working on this portion of the blanket for hours and would really appreciate help . . . Where the small squares join, you have the 2 corner holes close together. IS THE TREBLE STITCH AS US TREBLE OR A UK TREBLE? THOUGHT PERHAPS THIS WAS MY PROBLEM.
    Thanks

    1. Hi Gayla
It is a UK treble or a US double. It is the same stitch as the rest of the blanket, just don’t do the final stage of the stitch, start a new stitch in the second space and then finish off both together at the the same time. The stitch will be the same height as the rest and will look like an upside down ‘V’. I hope this helps and you can continue.
An alternative might be to do a normal cluster in between the 2 squares instead of using both the corner holes.

      1. Thanks so much. Once I learned this was actually done with a double crochet (US terms) stitch. It was a breeze. I have now made three of these blankets, but I stopped after the second round of squares because I wanted it to fit the back of a recliner.

  11. Muchas gracias por compartir esta manta.Es preciosa. Tengo una consulta ¿cuantos ovillos de lana usaste? ¡cuantos gramos?

  12. Hi, just found this gorgeous pattern. I bought wool last year for a blanket but couldn’t find a pattern that I liked til now! I will be doing it this week yay! I do have a question about the rounds of treble clusters. Do you have to increase them in multiples of 6 or can you you just do 6 everytime?

    1. Hi Kathryn
You can do the rounds of treble clusters in any combination you like as long as they are in multiples of six. So you can just do six each time if you want.
I hope you enjoy making your blanket

  13. Absolutely beautiful! Pls explain how you put the squares together…by sewing or did you crochet them together? Many thanks

  14. Hi Janette
I just love this blanket thank you so much for sharing the pattern .I am wanting to buy wool.
How many balls of each color did you use ?

    1. Hi Lorna, the blanket I made measures approximately 110cm square. I didn’t start with whole balls of yarn but the finished blanket weighs 725g which works out at less than 1 x 100g ball for each of the 9 colours. Hope this helps.

  15. Oh, I LOVE this!!! I have the yarn for it too! It may turn out to be an entry into my state fair next year.

  16. Thanks so much for posting the pattern for this wonderful blanket/throw. Have just finished it and it is so colourful. I originally crocheted it with the thought of giving it to a friend but am going to keep it for myself. I will post it on Instagram and give you a mention.

    1. Saw this at lunchtime and went straight to my local woolshop ! I’m on the 6th round of trebles tonight. The colours are so bright and vibrant. It’s a beautiful pattern thank you very much !!

  17. How can I find out the pattern for the beautiful blanket? I would like to make it for my son, he deserves something special.

    1. Hi Sharon
I didn’t write an official pattern, just the instructions in the article. But if you have a basic knowledge of crochet you should be ok. Feel free to ask questions of something is not clear.

  18. Do you recall just how many skeins of each color were needed to make this blanket. It is beautiful.

    Thanks.

    Lydia

    1. Hi Lydia, the blanket I made measures approximately 110cm square. I didn’t start with whole balls of yarn but the finished blanket weighs 725g which works out at less than 1 x 100g ball for each of the 9 colours. Hope this helps.

      1. I’ve decided to make your blanket and so far, so good. By far, it is the most beautiful thing that I have ever made. Thank you for the inspiration.

    1. Hi Sharon, the blanket I made measures approximately 110cm square. It weighs 725g which works out at less than 1 x 100g ball for each of the 9 colours. I don’t know exactly how big you want to make it but I think it is about 220x220cm. If so then it twice as wide and twice as long as the one I made and so will take about 4 times as much yarn. You could make 4 squares the same as mine and stitch them together or just keep going with more rounds of squares and stripes until you have the size you want. Hope this helps

    1. Hi Julie, the blanket I made measures approximately 110cm square. I didn’t start with whole balls of yarn but the finished blanket weighs 725g which works out at less than 1 x 100g ball for each of the 9 colours. Hope this helps.

  19. Hello there, thank you so much for sharing your beautiful work. May i just ask if you turn the work after every round (on the individual granny square and when doing the rounds of treble clusters). The colours you use are just amazing, thank you x

  20. Thank you Janette for the instruct to make your lovely blanket. The choice of stylecraft colours really make it beautiful. I’m in Australia so will have to order the yarn but they have such a huge variety of colour choices. Your cluster into the two adjoining granny squares is in fact just a treble decrease which works out great. I don’t mind the fact that it’s a little fatter. Looking forward to making this blanket soon.

  21. The blanket is GORGEOUS! I just saw it last night and want to try to make this. I see the center is 9 squares followed by the rounds. The 24 squares followed by 12 rounds. I can’t figure if it is 46 squares next then the rounds?? I am lost at the count for the last amount of squares then finished with 18 rounds. Can you help please and Thank you??

      1. Oh wow. Thank you so very much! I may have to attempt this as I LOVE granny squares. I just completed a rectangular granny with Mandala yarn. It’s super light weight and fine for Florida weather.

  22. This is absolutely gorgeous. Such a simple stitch and such a beautiful end result. Thank you so much for sharing!

  23. I am normally a “chug-a-longa large granny square blanket-square until I think it is big enough” person but your blanket took what it needed for me to challenge myself. I am doing slightly different colours but your beautiful blanket has certainly kick-started something me. I don’t get a lot of time to crochet but I will post the final blanket when it’s done.

    Kind regards

  24. Could you do this with four round granny squares ? I was going to do another blanket with squares but yours looks much nicer & I have already done the squares

    1. Hi Paula, I’m sure you could. You would need to do 8 rounds in between so that all the squares line up. Please let me see how it works out if you try it. You can tag me on Facebook or Instagram. (HandmadeInMarbella on both)

  25. I love this blanket. Im too new at crochet to understand all instructions. Will save until more skilled. Thank you for sharing. I will find you on facebook to see more of your artistry. BTW, I got a kick out reading posts from the start.

  26. Dejar Jannet, I’ starting your random rainbow blanket and apparently I’ having problems with the yarn. Mine must be thinner! Can You tell me the measure of each of your granny squares, please?
    Thanks a Lot
    Patricia from Argentina

  27. Hi Janette

I have finished by blancket and look gorgeous only one problem..it pulls at the corners can you advise what i did wrong??

    1. Hi Annelie
Possibly you crochet a bit tighter than I do. You might need a larger hook size. Or maybe an extra chain in the corners. Have you washed it yet? That also can flatten it out.

  28. This is just like the Wendy Blanket which was published several years ago. It is also made from Stylecraft Special DK. If your looking for more directions you can get it from Ravelry. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/wendy-blanket . I do love the colors of this one. I made mine with the same colors as the original author but now that I have seen these colors I really like them too.

    1. You can possibly copy the site address and paste it in Google translate and it will translate this page into French for you…just be sure to select ‘detect language’ so that when people have written comments in a different language, Google will pick it up.

  29. I love this blanket and would love to make one myself. However, I’m terrible at reading/understanding written instructions. Most of my projects are made by following a video tutorial. Would you consider making a video tutorial for this pattern?
Thanks so much and, again, beautiful work!
    Kim

  30. Hi Janette, firstly, let me say how lovely your blanket is….next I’d like to say a HUGE thank you to you for putting it at the top of the instructions, that you suggest people turn their granny squares over and work back the way they just came….and it sure does stop the work from twisting….I tell everyone I can!

Lastly, would you mind emailing me at beadnv {at} gmail {dot}com please? I’d like to discuss collaborating with you on a joint project using granny squares!

    Thanks & Happy Hooking
    Naomi

  31. First of all I really love this blanket!!! Wow!!
Secondly, I’d like to make mine in a rectangle instead of a square. Can I just start with 8 granny squares in the middle and it turn out ok when I start adding my other granny squares? I tried to read through all of the other comments before asking but there’s a lot!! You did a fabulous job describing this pattern!!!

    1. Hi Terri
Thank you for your kind comment. Yes you can start with 8 squares. The shape you start with dictates the finished shape. I’ve done it starting with 6 squares.

  32. Thank you for this pattern. I make my leftovers into granny squares and look for a pattern. I may have a year’s worth of 1 and 2 round squares. They currently fill a queen blanket plastic carrier. Lol. Anyway I love this blanket and will be using this pattern Thank you ☺️
