100 Rainbow Squares Blanket

Posted by

This blanket is made from Stylecraft Special DK in these colors:

  • Lipstick
  • Tomato
  • Spice
  • Saffron
  • Meadow
  • Sage
  • Storm Blue
  • Denim
  • Violet
  • Grape

I used a 4mm (G) hook and about 60-65g of each colour. The finished blanket weighs 600g and measures 94cm across (square)

To start make 9 x 2 round granny squares from each of the 10 colours. Then make 1 x 4 round granny square in lipstick. The squares are attached using the the join as you go method. (Attic 24 has a good tutorial here: http://attic24.typepad.com/weblog/joining-asyougo-sqaures.html) Take a lipstick 2 round granny square and join tomato to it, do 2 more rounds, joining to the lipstick 4 round square on the final round. Then take another lipstick 2 round granny square and join spice to it, do 2 more rounds joining to the lipstick and tomato square on the final round. Continue across the top row of squares in the same way using each colour in turn.

For the second row, take a tomato 2 round granny square and join lipstick to it, do 2 more rounds, joining to the lipstick 4 round granny square on the final round. Then make a 4 round square in tomato, joining it to the lipstick centre and tomato square above and the tomato centre and lipstick square to the left.

Continue in this way across the whole blanket, keeping the colour order correct in both directions and making a 4 round square in each colour in turn where you get to the point that the colours cross.

Here is a photo from above so you can see the colour order more clearly:

Then for the border I did 1 round of each colour in turn starting with lipstick. For the final round of grape instead of doing the normal 3 trebles (USA doubles) in each space I did 2 trebles, 2 chains and 2 trebles in each space and 7 trebles in the corners.

    1. Hi Anne, I’m sorry I haven’t written a complete pattern. I just write a basic outline of how I made it. For the join as you go method, the link in the article takes you to a tutorial written by Attic24 complete with photos. Maybe one day when I have more time I will make my own tutorials. In the meantime I just like to share the design ideas I have.
