Skills required:

  • Granny square (see my Youtube video here)
  • Continuous join (see my Youtube video here)
  • Treble crochet
  • Front post treble crochet
  • Back post treble crochet

Instructions are given in UK terms.

This blanket measures approximately 90cm x 70cm. It is easy to increase or decrease the size. Each square measures approximately 21cm so the size can be adjusted by multiples of 21cm.

I started with 6 x 100g balls of acrylic yarn and had between 15g – 30g of each colour left over. The colours I used are:

I have also previously made a multi-coloured larger version to use up left overs.

Instructions to make the grey version:

With a 4mm crochet hook make 6 x 10 round granny squares (1 of each colour) and 24 x 4 round granny squares (4 of each colour).

Next join the 24 small granny squares into 6 squares using continuous join method. I laid out my small squares on each ball of wool to make sure I didn’t have the same colour repeated (see photo).

Once you have all your squares arrange the layout. You are going to join each row with the continuous join method again. One colour for each row.

Once all your squares are joined it’s time for the border. Start in any corner with a standing treble (or 3 chains if you prefer). 1 treble in every treble all the way round. 1 treble, 2 chains and 1 treble in each corner. Whenever you get to where 2 squares join you need to do 3 trebles. 1 in the corner of the square, 1 in the join and the 3rd in the corner of the next square.

On the next round, start in any corner with 2 trebles. Then starting with a front post treble, alternate between front post and back post trebles all the way along the first side. You should end with a front post treble. In the corner do 2 trebles, 2 chains and 2 trebles then carry on with front post and back post trebles. Continue in the same way for as many rows as you want using a different colour for each round. I did 5 in total.
