Instructions how to make a front post granny square are in this tutorial.
To make a cushion approximately 36cm across you need to choose 4 different colours. 5 colours will give you a 45 cm cushion. You will use 2 threads of yarn at the same time. I used Stylecraft Special DK in white, silver, grey and slate and a 6mm hook.
1 cushion front uses approximately the following quantities:
- 1st colour – 10g
- 2nd colour – 25-30g
- 3rd colour – 40g
- 4th colour – 50-55g
I made 2 cushions and used the colours in opposite directions. Because weights of yarn differ slightly even in the same brand I actually used 53g white, 79g silver, 70g grey and 57g slate for the fronts.
For the backs of the cushions I just made normal granny squares in 1 colour using 2 strands. For the 2 cushions I used a little bit more than 2 full 100g balls of grey.
For the fronts of the cushions using the tutorial and 2 strands of thread work as follows:
- Rows 1 & 2 – 2 strands of colour 1
- Rows 3 & 4 – 1 strand of colour 1 & 1 strand of colour 2
- Rows 5 & 6 – 2 strands of colour 2
- Rows 7 & 8 – 1 strand of colour 2 & 1 strand of colour 3
- Rows 9 & 10 – 2 strands of colour 3
- Rows 11 & 12 – 1 strand of colour 3 & 1 strand of colour 4
- Rows 13 & 14 – 2 strands of colour 4
If you want a larger cushion just continue in the same way until you have the size you want.
The back of the cushion needs to be the same number of rows.
To join the cushions I simply crocheted them together using 2 strands using any of the colours. Put wrong sides together. You will be working through the spaces between trebles on both pieces. Start in the corner and make 1 double crochet (UK), chain 2 and make 1 double crochet in the next space. Continue across making 1 double crochet in each space and 2 chains in between. In the corners make 3 double crochet. Join 3 sides in this way. On the 4th side crochet in the same way but only through the the front layer. When you get to the corner 2 double crochets, slip stitch to the double crochet you started with, turn the cushion over and continue the edging across the 4th side of the back piece. Slip stitch to join the corner. Using the spaces between trebles as button holes, sew buttons to the back piece to close the cushion.
